Does Beetroot Juice Lower Blood Pressure?
Yes — modestly, and briefly. Pooled across randomized trials, nitrate-rich beetroot juice lowers systolic blood pressure by roughly 4 to 5 mmHg. The diastolic number barely moves. And the effect is largely acute, meaning it appears within hours of drinking it and fades afterward.
That last point is the one everybody skips. Beetroot juice is not a treatment you complete. It is something you would have to keep drinking, every day, for as long as you wanted the effect. Most articles quote the 4 mmHg and stop there.
What the Trials Actually Found
The most-cited synthesis pooled 16 randomized clinical trials with 254 participants in total. Inorganic nitrate and beetroot juice were associated with a systolic reduction of 4.4 mmHg. Diastolic pressure fell 1.1 mmHg, which did not reach statistical significance.
Look at the study design and the picture sharpens. Every one of those 16 trials was a crossover study. Each had between 7 and 30 participants. The interventions ran from two hours to fifteen days. The authors themselves concluded that the findings needed testing in long-term trials and in people at greater cardiovascular risk.
That is not a criticism of the research. It is a description of what the research is: strong evidence of a real short-term physiological effect, and thin evidence about whether it matters over months.
The Longer Trials Are Less Impressive
Two longer studies are worth knowing about, and they point in different directions.
A 60-day double-blind randomized trial in adults with elevated blood pressure found 24-hour systolic pressure dropped by about 10.8 mmHg in the nitrate group, with ambulatory diastolic pressure down around 7 mmHg. That is a genuinely large effect sustained over two months.
But a 4-week double-blind randomized trial in 60 hypertensive patients with polycystic kidney disease compared nitrate-replete beetroot juice against nitrate-deplete beetroot juice — the same drink with the nitrate stripped out. Blood pressure fell in both groups. There was no significant difference between them. If the nitrate were doing the work, the depleted group should not have improved.
Honest reading: the nitrate mechanism is real and well described, but it is not the only thing happening when someone starts drinking beetroot juice daily. Some of what gets attributed to nitrate may be the trial effect, the attention, or the other compounds in beets.
How It Works, In Plain Terms
Beets are unusually high in inorganic nitrate. Bacteria on your tongue convert dietary nitrate into nitrite. In the body, nitrite becomes nitric oxide, a molecule that signals blood vessel walls to relax. Wider vessels, lower pressure.
Two practical consequences follow from that chain, and both are routinely ignored:
- Antibacterial mouthwash blocks it. The tongue bacteria are a required step. Rinsing them away removes most of the effect.
- The dose is nitrate, not juice. Trials use concentrated juice standardized to roughly 400 mg of nitrate daily. A random bottle from the store is not standardized, and its nitrate content depends on soil, variety and processing. You do not know what you are getting.
What Ayurveda Does and Does Not Say
A boundary first, because it gets crossed constantly online: beetroot is not a classical Ayurvedic herb for blood pressure. The beet as we know it came to South Asia comparatively recently. Charaka, Sushruta and Bhavaprakasha do not discuss it, and anyone attributing a beetroot recommendation to those texts is making it up.
What Ayurveda can offer is a way to think about whether beetroot suits you. In classical terms beetroot is madhura (sweet in taste), ushna (heating in its effect on the body) and grounding. Sweet and grounding qualities settle Vyana Vata — the sub-dosha that governs circulation and the movement of blood through the vessels. That is a reasonable fit for someone whose pressure runs high alongside anxiety, cold hands and irregular readings.
The heating quality is the caution. Someone with a strong Pitta pattern — running hot, irritable, prone to acid reflux and flushing — may find large daily quantities of a heating food unhelpful. Ayurveda does not have a single food that is right for everyone, and that is the actual contribution it makes here.
Note also what beetroot has in common with the classical dietary advice: it is whole food, prepared fresh, eaten in season. Ayurveda's argument has always been that food quality determines whether Agni, the digestive fire, produces nourishment or Ama, the sticky residue of incomplete digestion. Fresh beets pass that test. Beetroot gummies do not.
Where This Sits Against Other Options
For perspective, here is the same class of intervention measured the same way:
- Beetroot juice: about 4.4 mmHg systolic, mostly acute, short trials.
- Magnesium: about 2 to 3 mmHg systolic on average, larger in people who are deficient or already medicated.
- Cutting sodium: comparable or larger, and free.
- Regular exercise: larger than all of the above, and it does several other things at once.
None of these are competitors. They stack. But if someone is drinking beetroot juice daily while sleeping five hours and eating restaurant food, the juice is not where the leverage is.
What to Actually Do
Eat the beet rather than only drinking it, unless you are specifically after the acute nitrate hit. Whole beets bring fiber and potassium along with the nitrate.
If you drink juice, use concentrated nitrate-standardized shots if you want to replicate the research. Otherwise accept that the dose is unknown.
Skip antibacterial mouthwash on days you are relying on it. It removes the bacteria that make the conversion possible.
Measure properly. Same time of day, seated, rested five minutes, same arm, written down. A 4 mmHg shift is invisible without a log.
Do not treat it as a replacement for anything. No trial has ever tested beetroot juice against blood pressure medication, and none has shown it prevents a stroke or a heart attack.
Safety Note
Beetroot is high in oxalate. If you have a history of calcium oxalate kidney stones, large daily quantities are a genuine concern and worth raising with your doctor. If you take nitrate-based medication such as nitroglycerin, or a PDE5 inhibitor such as sildenafil, adding a nitrate-rich juice can compound the blood-pressure-lowering effect — ask your prescriber before starting. The same caution applies to anyone on prescribed antihypertensives, since combined effects can cause dizziness or excessive drops. Beeturia, the pink discoloration of urine, is harmless. Do not reduce prescribed medication on the basis of a food.
