Ayurveda recognizes 3 energies of the body which are called Doshas in Sanskrit. They are responsible for the different characteristics of a human being and their body constitution or Prakriti. If they are all synchronised and balanced, the body is stable and healthy. An imbalance in the Doshas can cause ailments and ill health.
Vata (The Energy of Movement)
The main elements of Vata are Space and Air. Most body movements like breathing, blinking, muscle and tissue movements, heart beats and the movement of our cell membranes are governed by the Vata Dosha.
Pitta (The Energy of
Digestion and Metabolism)
Pitta dominates the Fire and Water elements of the body. The efficiency of our entire metabolic system depends on the Pitta Dosha. Digestion, absorption, nutrition, metabolism and body temperature, are all connected to Pitta.
Kapha (The Energy of Lubrication)
The elements of Earth and Water are associated with Kapha. It is the energy that provides lubrication to all our body systems and organs. It is the energy that keeps the joints in working order, gives moisture to the skin and helps in maintaining immunity.
