Does Dark Chocolate Lower Blood Pressure?

Yes, by a small amount — and almost certainly less than you have been told. The Cochrane review, which is the highest standard of evidence synthesis available, pooled 35 trials and found cocoa lowered blood pressure by 1.76 mmHg systolic and 1.76 mmHg diastolic.

Under 2 mmHg. That is smaller than the difference between two readings taken ten minutes apart on the same arm.

There is a real signal underneath it, and it is worth understanding properly. But the phrase "dark chocolate lowers blood pressure," repeated without a number attached, has done more work for confectionery marketing than for anyone's arteries.

What the Evidence Actually Says

Karin Ried and colleagues updated their Cochrane review in 2017 with 35 randomized trials covering 40 treatment comparisons and 1,804 mostly healthy participants. Trials ran two to 18 weeks, averaging nine, and delivered 30 to 1,218 mg of flavanols per day.

The pooled result: systolic down 1.76 mmHg, diastolic down 1.76 mmHg. Both statistically significant. Neither large.

Baseline pressure changed the picture considerably. Systolic pressure fell by about 4 mmHg in people who were already hypertensive. It tended downward in prehypertensive participants. In people with normal blood pressure, there was no significant effect at all. This is the same pattern that shows up with garlic, beetroot and most food-based interventions: they move a system that is out of range and barely touch one that is not.

The Cochrane authors also noted something that should give any reader pause. Unblinded trials tended to show bigger reductions than double-blinded ones. And a separate meta-analysis found that industry-funded trials reported slightly larger effects than independent ones. Neither observation invalidates the finding. Both should shrink your confidence in the top end of the range.

Bar Versus Powder

A 2022 meta-analysis in Foods separated the two formats across 31 studies. Dark chocolate lowered resting systolic pressure by 3.94 mmHg. Cocoa beverage lowered it by 1.54 mmHg, and that result was not statistically significant.

The same analysis found the effect grew when daily flavanol intake reached 900 mg, or epicatechin reached 100 mg. That is the number that ends the fantasy. Nine hundred milligrams of flavanols is not a square of chocolate after dinner. It is a research-grade dose, delivered in trials by standardized products designed to preserve compounds that ordinary chocolate manufacturing destroys.

The Thing Nobody Prints on the Wrapper

Flavanols are bitter. Bitterness does not sell chocolate. So the industrial process that turns cacao into a pleasant bar — fermenting, roasting, and especially alkalizing, the step called Dutch processing — strips out much of the flavanol content.

The cacao percentage on the front of the package tells you how much cocoa solid is in the bar. It tells you nothing about how much flavanol survived. Two bars both labeled 85 percent can differ severalfold in the compound that produced the trial results.

Which means the practical advice "eat dark chocolate for your blood pressure" instructs people to eat a calorie-dense, sugar-containing food in the hope of getting a compound that may largely have been removed, for an effect that in the best data is under 2 mmHg.

The Largest Trial Ever Run Did Not Find What Everyone Expected

COSMOS is the study to know. Sesso and colleagues randomized 21,442 US adults to a cocoa extract supplement delivering 500 mg of flavanols daily, including 80 mg of epicatechin, or placebo, and followed them a median of 3.6 years.

The primary outcome — total cardiovascular events — did not reach statistical significance. Hazard ratio 0.90, p = 0.11. Cardiovascular death, a secondary endpoint, was lower in the cocoa group, which is genuinely interesting and genuinely not what the trial set out to prove. Secondary endpoints generate hypotheses. They do not settle them.

That is the honest state of play: a real but small effect on a number, and no demonstrated effect on the outcomes that matter.

Ayurveda Has Nothing to Say About Chocolate

And that is worth saying out loud, because a surprising number of articles pretend otherwise.

Cacao is native to Central and South America. It reached the Indian subcontinent centuries after Charaka Samhita, Ashtanga Hridayam and Bhavaprakasha Nighantu were composed. There is no classical Ayurvedic verse on chocolate. Anyone quoting one has invented it.

What Ayurveda can do is analyze an unfamiliar substance by its qualities, which is exactly how the tradition absorbed new plants for two thousand years. Applied to a modern dark chocolate bar, that analysis is not flattering:

  • Rasa (taste): predominantly tikta (bitter) and kashaya (astringent) from the cacao, with madhura (sweet) from the sugar. Bitter and astringent reduce Kapha. Sweet increases it.
  • Guna (quality): guru (heavy) and snigdha (oily) from cocoa butter. Heavy and oily are Kapha-increasing and, in quantity, ama-forming — the sticky metabolic residue of food the digestive fire could not process.
  • Virya (potency): the theobromine and caffeine content is stimulating and ushna in effect, which is why it disturbs sleep and can provoke palpitations in sensitive people.

The classical reading, then: a heavy, sweet, stimulating food that burdens Agni when eaten regularly and produces ama. That is not an endorsement, and it should not be dressed up as one.

What to Do With This

Eat dark chocolate because you enjoy it. That is a good enough reason. It is a better reason than a 1.76 mmHg effect.

If you eat it, choose 70 percent or higher and non-alkalized where the label says so. Keep the portion to a square or two, not a bar.

Do not add it to your day. If the chocolate is extra calories on top of what you already eat, and it contributes to weight gain, you have moved backwards — each kilogram of weight loss is associated with roughly 0.4 to 0.5 mmHg of systolic reduction in real-world primary care data, and each kilogram gained works the other way.

Spend the effort elsewhere. Sodium, movement, sleep and weight each produce several times this effect and cost nothing.

How This Compares to the Formula

Cocoa is not an ingredient in Ivy's Mukta Vati, which contains Arjuna bark, Ashwagandha root, Gotu Kola, Guduchi stem, Jyotishmati, Pushkarmool, Musta and Mukta Pishti.

And to be consistent about the standard applied above: the systematic review of Arjuna in chronic stable angina concluded the evidence was insufficient to draw conclusions for or against, with studies of poor methodological design. No trial has tested the finished Ivy's Mukta Vati formula. Every study referenced on this site examines a single herb, not the tablet. Cocoa's blood pressure data, small as it is, comes from more rigorous trials than Arjuna's.

Safety Note

Dark chocolate eaten as a food is safe for most people. Concentrated cocoa flavanol supplements are a different product and should be discussed with your prescriber, particularly if you take blood pressure or blood-thinning medication. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, which can disturb sleep, provoke palpitations and worsen reflux in sensitive people. It is calorie-dense, and daily portions added to an existing diet can drive weight gain, which raises blood pressure by more than the chocolate lowers it. Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Never reduce a prescribed medication on the strength of a dietary change.
